For American Indian, dance is a sacred communion with the Great Spirit. The steady repetition of ancient patterns, enhanced by the primal rhythm of drums or rattle, evolve the dancer into a trance journey: She steps onto the path, is absorbed into the vortex of energy, then transcends the physical world. The Sioux dancer enters the gestation phase of her journey. She crosses the timeless bridge between worlds. Strong White Butterfly medicine infuses her body, grounds her feet with its golden vitality, fuels her spirit with ecstasy. Seeds of memory awaken: She recalls deepening shades of lavender - that wise vision of compassion carried in the hearts of her ancestors to the Other Side, where the Great Spirit waits. The Great Spirit tells her, "it is your time, Daughter, to come into the Light." As lavender ripens into violet, she remembers. Butterfly medicine quickens her blood, as it stirred the blood of Great Grandmother, she remembers: Many moons came before this moment. She lifts her arms, and unfolds her wings to Light. –Annie Woods
